Choosing a Doctor for Your Baby

Choosing a doctor for your new baby can be a difficult choice, as parents want the best possible healthcare for their children. Typically, a child will see either a family medicine physician or a pediatrician. Each specialty has its own advantages, but it is ultimately dependent on which doctor is right for you and your baby.

Family Medicine Physician

A family medicine physician provides continuing, comprehensive health care for both the individual and the family. Unlike a pediatrician, a family medicine physician treats patients of all ages, from pediatrics through geriatrics. Therefore, your child can see the same doctor from birth through adulthood. In addition, your entire family can conveniently see the same doctor, which provides him or her with a broader scope of the medical history within your family.

Pediatrician

A pediatrician is a child’s physician who specializes in the management of the physical, mental, and emotional well being of babies, children, adolescents, and young adults. Pediatricians’ patients range from newborns to young adults, but the cut-off age varies depending on the individual practice.

With such a big decision, where do you start? Check with local experts, like family and friends, and of course, Bon Secours St. Francis Health System, as well as your insurance company. Once you gather a list of physicians you are considering, do some homework by asking questions:

  • Does the doctor welcome questions?
  • Does the doctor take time to discuss problems and listen to your concerns?
  • Do you and the doctor agree on the core values of the patient-physician relationship?
  • Do you know and like the other doctors in the practice?
  • Is the office staff friendly and helpful?
  • How long do you usually have to wait?
  • Does the office have convenient office locations and appointment times?

We encourage you to schedule an appointment to interview the physician. A good relationship is the right start for baby’s good health.
